SAN JUAN ISLAND RESIDENCE
Location: San Juan Islands, Washington
Type: Un-built, Residential
A waterfront residence study in the San Juan Islands located on a heavily wooded site with views of the sound and a small, rocky cove. The house is designed as an “L” shape so all rooms have views obliquely toward the northeast and the water. The plan is kept to one-story to avoid stairs and facilitate sight-lines below the tree canopy.
The leg of the “L” that contains the gathering spaces is designed as a glassy box that cantilevers over the forest floor — the living room will feel like being in a treehouse. A lap pool located under the cantilevered great room will provide reflections of the green canopy. Materials include stone, concrete, expanses of glass, Douglas Fir and steel. The siding is shou sugi ban charred/blackened wood, blending the exterior of the house with the bark on the trees that surround it. Stay tuned for project updates!
