Our work on the Medicine Springs Pumphouse explored the future of a site centered on a natural spring with deep cultural significance to the Nisqually Indian Tribe.

An important a source of medicine water for Tribal elders, the spring was inaccessible for decades while serving as part of the City of Olympia's municipal water system. Following the Tribe's reacquisition of the property, our team examined how the existing pump house could be adapted to reconnect the community with the spring.

Throughout the process, our team had the opportunity to learn from and participate in the Tribe’s approach, rooted in sharing stories, connecting with nature and this particular place, and coming together as a community.

The work included strategies to restore and protect the site from contamination, while exploring opportunities for the building to support gathering, education, and cultural celebration.
