A compact post-war home is renewed with a more open ground floor plan, strengthened indoor–outdoor flow, and refined architectural details.
Tucked into a quiet street on Capitol Hill, this home is a modest post-war structure reimagined to support its longtime owners in a new phase of life.
The renovation focused primarily on the ground floor, stripping away a compartmentalized floor plan in favor of openness and clarity. Small, disconnected rooms were replaced with a fluid interior that centers around a light-filled kitchen and opens outward to a much-loved back garden. A new bridge and dual entry points establish a better indoor-outdoor rhythm—encouraging circulation, gathering, and retreat within a compact footprint.
The entry is framed by a tall, custom metal canopy. Echoing this language, a series of facade interventions— streamlining several canopies and adding a clean-lined pop-out—bring coherence to previously mismatched elements. These details lend the home a renewed presence on its block. The Lookout at Lake Chelan is a master-planned residential community on the north shore of the lake, organized around walkable streets, shared amenities, and long views across the water. Within this setting, we were engaged by the developer to design a series of modern homes as part of a growing neighborhood that blends year-round residents with vacation living.
Across the project, we designed approximately eighteen homes, along with interiors for an additional six. Some were tied to developer-owned lots; others were commissioned by private clients who selected our studio from the community’s design review board. Each home responds to its specific site, framing views of Lake Chelan and emphasizing the indoor–outdoor living that defines life in the valley.
As construction was executed by local builders, individual homes vary in their final expression. Still, the collective work introduced a modern architectural language within a largely traditional community, contributing to the ongoing evolution of The Lookout’s residential offerings.
